A false dichotomy is posited between "individualism" and "community-orientedness." Both supposedly exclude each other. In fact, individualism understood as "self-expression"finds fulfillment in serving, not just a small group, but a larger group: the pubic. The author illustrates by discussing farming villages in the Ilocos region. Over time there has been a growth in individualism--people no longer submit to parental decree about whom they should marry or what career they should pursue.
