The Catholic Church in the Philippines is in a unique position to intervene in political crises because of its numbers, its extensive network of institutions, its possession of a social doctrine which extends to the economic and political-and particularlbecause of the weakness of the political party system. While Church leadership has helped the nation to weather some serious crises, there is no assurance that it will continue to be effective.
