The precise meaning of community when applied to data is problematic. Three clusters of villages, from three Philippine cultures illustrate this point. The cultures are: 1) the Ilongots of the Sierra Madre in the 1960s, 2) the Moslem Tausug as describedby iefer in the same period and 3) the Christian Ilocanos as described by ethnographers, including the author during the postwar period. The scope of community defined as a group with mutual sympathy, varies.
