THE PHILIPPINE MACROECONOMY AND ITS TRADE WITH JAPAN IN THE POSTWAR ERA

Trade between the Philippines (R.P.) and Japan has expanded impressively over the past three decades. From 1970 to 1995, R.P. imports from Japan grew fifteen-fold while exports to Japan grew six-fold. The much faster expansion of imports relative to expots has resulted in huge trade deficits for the Philippines. This paper traces the growth path of the bilateral trade flows between the Philippines and Japan, and discusses the economic and policy factors that influence these growth patterns.
