RENEWABLE ENERGY: PROSPECTS FOR SUPPLYING ELECTRICITY IN THE DEREGULATED MARKET IN THE PHILIPPINES

This paper attempts to evaluate the prospects (including the financial viability) of renewable energy in a competitive market environment such as the Philippines. Renewable energy projects in the country prior to restructuring are mostly government sponored with heavy subsidies and risks. There are few renewable projects initiated by the private sector, however, the share of renewable energy in electricity generation is still far negligible compared to conventional energy due to its high cost.
