The paper discusses concepts and principles of open space planning. It also compares and contrasts divergent approaches that have evolved in the planning of open space. These changing concepts, in the context of urban development, are examined amidst the experiences of Great Britain and the United States, and a focus on their development in Philippine planning is also discussed. Finally, the paper outlines some of the major issues pertaining to open space in contemporary urban planning.
