With a thesis pointing to the tendency of the Asian planner to conceptualize his urban experience using a generally western model as the probable reason for his relative failure to cope with urban growth, the urgent need to reorient this vision and to formulate a new urban model is recognized. This alternative “positive perspective” model may both reflect more adequately the actual urban conditions in Asian societies and could serve as a realistic guide to dynamic urban development. More than contrasting the reality of the Asian city with the construct of the conventional urban model to show the limitations of said model, and other popular views on city growth, the article shall proceed on proposing the strategies and standards which shall prove to be considered more appropriate. Six cities of Asia are selected to illustrate the arguments.
