Combating Hidden Hunger through Biofortification

Micronutrient deficiency, more commonly known as “hidden hunger,” is a form of malnutrition that occurs when intake and absorption of vitamins and minerals are too low to sustain good health and development. This can result in various health issues, such as impaired body functions and stunted growth in children. Long-term deficiency can even result in chronic illnesses or disorders and death if left untreated. Biofortification aims to produce affordable and accessible staple foods or crops that provide the needed micronutrients normally acquired through eating nutrient-dense foods (i.e., fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy). With cases of hidden hunger being prevalent in most developing countries, biofortification offers an economical solution to malnutrition and nutrient deficiency. It is sustainable and not only addresses food security but also gives everyone equal access to a healthier life.
