This paper contains five major parts. It starts with an exposition of the theory itself. The second and third parts report on the application of the theory in analyzing the spatial structuring of Metropolitan Manila. These are followed by a critique of the theory and evaluation of its applicability in the particular case of Metropolitan Manila. The paper concludes with a beginning: the start of explorations into the need for and the possible configuration of a new model that will aid in understanding fully the urban development processes in Third World societies. In a manner of speaking, the whole exercise represents that stage in a fishing expedition where one is just putting out to sea rather than coming ashore with the catch.
