Teaching Methods in Islamic Education

This policy brief examines various traditional and contemporary teaching methodologies used in Islamic education, evaluating their applicability as a teaching policy in the Philippines. It highlights how Islamic knowledge is transmitted through established chains of narration, such as tawatur (mass transmission) for the Qur'an and rigorous authentication for Hadith. The brief then discusses specific teaching methods, including scaffolding (gradual introduction of concepts), connecting lessons to current events, tasmi' (audition or recitation), ijtihad practice (legal reasoning discussions), modeling (demonstration), storytelling, and mentoring. The paper assesses the time, resources, and teacher competency required for each method, noting that while some are widely applicable, others like tasmi' and ijtihad are more suited for specialized Islamic learning institutions. Overall, the brief argues that these diverse methods enhance learning and retention within Islamic education, supporting its institutionalization in the Philippines through programs like ALIVE and ISAL.
