The effect of climate change is very evident, and our agriculture sector is one greatly affected by it. Effects of climate change like drought, flood, and typhoon were experienced by farmers all over the Philippines. This study aims to determine the climate change adaptation practices of farmers.
This study finds that the perceived change in occurrence of extreme events, like drought, flood, and typhoon, and incidence of pests and diseases were recalled by farmers and they can predict its occurrence based on their usual practice. Farmers get climate information from mass media like radio and television, while the source of extension information and good practice options where from the MAO and Barangay Officials. This means that climate information, which can help farmers in their farm decision-making were not integrated in the extension advisory given to farmers in the study sites. Adaptation strategies such as change in planting calendar, delaying harvesting and use of resistant varieties were practiced by farmers. Yield is negatively affected by extreme events and crop insurance is not a popular option for farmers.
Effects of climate change can be countered with proper knowledge on how to use climate information and consider it in farm decision-making activities.
