Challenges in the security environment has prompted states to engage in increased security cooperation with other states in the form of strategic partnerships. A rise in "strategic partnerships" has been seen in East Asia, warranting a clearer understanding of the concept and its utility. This article provides a conceptual exploration of strategic partnerships in East Asia and examines established partnerships in the region, the content of the partnerships and the importance of the partnerships to the states.
