MCPI 2003-03: Documentation of Product Development Processes in Selected MFIs – The CARD MBA Microinsurance Experience (A Case Study)

The study looks at the the effectiveness of the microinsurance programs of CARD MBA. The results of external audit are positive; there is an effective management of changes in the organization; with no serious complaints against the management and Board; and, that the original mission of the MBA is carried out, i.e., to help members and their families overcome risks. CARD has an existing management contract with the MBA as advisors in the Board. The paper concludes that The products of the CARD-MBA are deemed innovative in that they meet the demand for micro-insurance of poor households in relatively large numbers. It is focused on helping poor families cope with risks factors associated with death, disability and old age. The Association’s experience shows that micro-insurance can be a viable undertaking, provided there is a critical mass of clients and adequate resources that could meet pooled risks.
