Managing Packaging Waste in the ASEAN Region


Packaging is an indispensable part of retail, logistics, and consumer goods. It contains, protects, preserves, and transports products from producers to consumers. Common packaging materials used consist of plastic, paper and board, metals, glass, and wood. During the last decades, the packaging industry has been involved significantly in terms of innovation, material use, and complexity of design. However, in parallel, the consumption of single-use packaging has dramatically increased also in ASEAN member states due to economic growth, rapid urbanization, and changing consumption patterns and lifestyles. The factsheet summarizes relevant aspects of packaging management and gives an overview of related relevant legal frameworks of ASEAN member states that aim to guide to enhance packaging management and to lessen related environmental issues such as marine littering.
