Income Effects of the Palayamanan System of Farming in Rainfed Areas in Pamplona, Camarines Sur and Milagros, Masbate

This paper reports the economic outcome of the introduction of the Palayamanan system through technology demonstration in Milagros, Masbate and Pamplona, Camarines Sur. The results of the CRDES survey were used as baseline in the income evaluation of the project interventions. The findings showed that the impact of interventions was location-specific. Success was affected by a variety of factors, which included climate variability, crop-mix suitability, pest and disease incidence, and technical know-how of farmers. Because of the intervention, co-operators were inspired to venture into vegetable production and income diversification. The positive impacts of diversification could not be readily seen after a year of implementation, but nonetheless, it was deemed beneficial in making farmers more resilient and more able to adapt to climate change. It is recommended that involvement of farmers, extension workers, researchers, and other representatives be enhanced and that more site-specific technologies be developed.
