During typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana), the Philippines experienced an excessive downpour of rain and an uncontrolled storm water surge that devastated Metro Manila. This event, scientists say, is already the effect of climate change.
The harmful effects of global warming bring about climate change. Global warming is caused by the entrapment and re-radiation of heat within the earth’s atmosphere caused by the envelopment of greenhouse gases (GHG). Primary producers of greenhouse gases are buildings, industries, and transportation. Buildings are the top emitters of GHG, and it is important to control and minimize their emission of GHG. This can be done through energy-efficient building design, construction and operations, and adoption of best practices. It is then that sustainable development is thought of as a principle and a concept to be practiced in order to mitigate global warming.
