Crime Statistics

This paper discusses crime statistics in the Philippines. A safe and secure environment is important for fostering investment and economic growth. The Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016 recognizes this and identifies crime incident reduction as a strategy to promote public order and internal stability. However, recent high-profile crimes have cast a shadow over the country’s peace and order situation. Crime is defined as an act committed or omitted in violation of a law forbidding or commanding it, for which punishment is imposed upon conviction. For statistical purposes, crime is divided into index and non-index crimes. Data shows a steady drop in crime rates from 2002-2007, followed by a large jump in 2009 due to changes in the PNP’s crime reporting system.
