China’s new industries and the East Asian production networks

This paper examines the pace and pattern of development of China’s new industries, as it may bear on East Asian production networks. Two industries are selected for the study: the electronics (E) and information technology (IT) industry, and the automobile industry (passenger cars, in particular). Both are classified as pillar industries in China, but are strongly dominated by FDI, and foreign technology, notably from Japan, Taiwan, Germany, and the United States.
