Breaking Out of the Rut: Moving Forward with Philippine-LAC Economic Relations

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) as a region is facing secular stagnation right now. Meanwhile, the Philippines’ balance of trade remains negative (i.e., import-dependent) and for decades, the Philippine government has desired to finally address structural problems that hinder optimal export capabilities. This commentary seeks to address whether the looming long-term decline in productivity and in GDP growth in the LAC region is a significant threat or challenge in enhancing economic engagement (existing and forthcoming) between LAC and the Philippines. What must the Philippines do to mitigate the impacts of secular stagnation in LAC? What are the Philippines’ best options to cooperate?
