As the 1980s began, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies has continued to strengthen its position so that it may be able to respond more effectively to the challenges of the new decade. Among other efforts, it has finetuned its research program to deal with what may be considered as the most critical development bottlenecks in the years ahead. It has consolidated its financial position in such a way as to enable it to sustain a modestly sized research program costing about P3 million per year in real terms in the next four to five years. This report reviews PIDS activities in 1980. Section 1 reports on the research and research-related activities of PIDS, while section 2 deals with the financial operations of PIDS as of December 31, 1980. The third section discusses the thrusts of PIDS activities in 1981 and the next four years in the context of the challenges facing it.
