Knowledge-sharing Session with World Bank: The Promise of Global Skills Partnership for Win-Win Migration Outcomes

The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) held a Knowledge-sharing Session with Dr. Pablo Ariel Acosta, a Lead Economist and Global Lead for Migration from the World Bank, featuring his study on June 18, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the PIDS Conference Hall and via Zoom.

The study titled “The Promise of Global Skills Partnership for Win-Win Migration Outcomes” explores potential solutions to global workforce challenges. Developing countries have a surge in young people needing jobs and training, while developed nations face aging populations with critical skill shortages. Increased emigration could bridge this gap but developing countries risk losing their most qualified workers (brain drain). The study proposes Global Skill Partnerships (GSPs) as a way to address these concerns. These programs would connect skill development in developing countries with labor mobility opportunities, creating a win-win situation for both origin and destination countries. The study delves deeper into the concept of GSPs, analyzing existing programs and offering recommendations for successful, scalable, and sustainable implementation.
