The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), held a public webinar on March 11, 2021, 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, via CISCO Webex. The virtual event’s topic is the digital economy. ADB’s Senior Economist Mr. James Villafuerte talks about the increasing use and adoption of digital technology and its impacts on the lives of people, especially in the post-pandemic period. He presents the benefits and opportunities from digital transformation as well as discusses the risks and challenges that come with it, and how sectors can work together to ensure financial inclusion in the digital economy. PIDS Senior Research Fellow Dr. Jose Ramon Albert, on the other hand, presented his paper titled “Towards Measuring the Platform Economy: Concepts, Indicators, and Issues”. The study defines platforms, typologies, and related classifications, as well as describes the drivers of value creation and capture in platforms, and discusses policy implications. It also tackles issues on data collection arising from the complex and cross-border nature of digital platforms. At the same time, it proposes possible approaches for obtaining data and indicators to measure the online platform economy to allow policymakers, businesses, and the public to better understand the socioeconomic implications of increasing digitalization and the rise of the digital economy.
