PN 2015-29: Enhancing and Maximizing Participation of Private Health Facilities in TB Control

Although free services and drugs are available in various Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) units, many tuberculosis (TB) patients still prefer to go to private health facilities due to proximity and better quality of service. This Policy Note discusses the strategies recommended for a more active and sustainable involvement and engagement of the private sector as an important partner in controlling TB. In particular, strong and dedicated support of the government to the private sector is crucial for the partnership to continue. It is also important to develop and pilot a short messaging service-based information system to assist in the referral, tracking of patients and defaulters, and facilitate the referral and feedback system among DOTS facilities and private service providers. There is also a need to review the procurement and distribution system to ensure steady supply of anti-TB drugs. The conduct of information and education campaign to promote the availability of quality-assured DOTS services is also warranted.
