KMBI: Case Study of a Philippine Microfinance Institution


This paper gives the history and current profile of KMBI, which stands for Kabalikat Para Sa Maunlad Na Buhay, a Philippine NGO organised in 1986. By 1997, it decided to become a formal financial institution, a rural bank, focused on delivering microfinancial services to very poor subsistence entrepreneurs using the trust banking approach - working through Christian, self-help groups of 15-35 members The paper outlines KMBI's: * Credit and savings methodology, including area and client identification, * Loan eligibility and loan application process, * Institutional development programme * Operational and financial performance, 1992- 1997, * Staffing patterns and human resource development, * Monitoring and evaluation, * Recruitment, training and management of personnel Further outlines KMBI's future directions for capacity building and expansion to other areas of the Philippines
