DLSU RP 2003-06: Cultural Political Economy of Televised News: An Exploratory Comparative Study of GMA and ABS-CBN News and Public Affairs Teams

This research focused on media as a political institution, and used a post-modern critical approach. In both its focus and its research approach, this project attempted to enrich both the epistemological and the methodological domains of political science. This research project aimed to conduct a comparative inquiry into the structural and subjective manifestation of ideology, as well as the dialectical relationships that exist between structures and agents that reside in two news organizations, namely GMA and ABS-CBN. Specifically, the project aimed to: (1) provide a critical analysis of the role of media organizations in the production of news; (2) inquire into the role of structural and personal ideologies, and the dynamic interplay between them, in the production of news; and (3) identify, without attempting to come up with a grand theory, the factors that define differences and similarities in the manner the two media organizations behave vis-à-vis the mediation of the production of news.
