CLSU 2002-09: Retooling of Legume Growers and Stakeholders in Region III

The project aimed to update and enhance the knowledge and skills of legume growers and stakeholders in the region in order to improve productivity and profitability and ultimately, contribute to food security in the region. Specifically, the objectives were: (a) to disseminate knowledge and information on new and recommended varieties of legumes; (b) to put up techno-demonstration managed by farmer cooperators under the direct supervision of CLSU and DA; and (c) to assist farmer groups to establish market linkages with processors of legumes. This project was implemented utilizing the Municipal Science and Technology Advisory Program (MSTAP) funds obtained from DOST and CLSU funds. For the period under review, super peanut was planted during the wet season, June to November 2001. A total of 1.2 ha was planted by 11 farmers in five barangays in Cuyapo, Lupao, and San Jose City. The expected yield was 2, 400 kg but the actual yield obtained was 1,079 kg. After the wet season planting, a field day was conducted on November 14, 2001. This was attended by farmers, technicians, CLSU officials, researchers and staff, and LGU officials of San Jose City. Based on the results and observations of the first season planting, the second cropping was done only in Palestina, San Jose City by three farmers with a total of 4 ha.
