Poverty Alleviation and Reforms in Rural Finance: What is the Score?

The paper discusses the reforms in rural finance and the initial effects of the new approach which relies on the market mechanism for credit allocation and pricing. It argues that while the current policy thrust in the ural financial market are steps in the right direction, much more remains to be done in terms of prior and complementary reforms and development of the relevant institutions to make a significant dent in poverty alleviation.
