TThe Role of Infrastructure in Urban, Rural, and Regional Development: A Survey of Literature

The article elucidates the relationship between infrastructure investments and the development process. To do so, the author ventured into the definition of infrastructure and its roles in spatial development, the latter generally being serving as: 1) a “basis”; and 2) a policy tool, for development. Furthermore, the article discussed the impacts of infrastructure on urban, rural-agricultural and regional development through a review of relevant empirical studies. With findings affirming infrastructure’s “reciprocal relationship” with spatial development, an essential policy implication refers to having the right package of physical, social and institutional infrastructure investments as prerequisite for widespread development.
