With the vast majority of the population living in the rural areas, the national economy largely based on agriculture and successful industrialization largely dependent on the increased output of the agricultural sector, rural development is unquestionably essential to national development. Hence, the article presents a conceptual framework for rural development, with an overview of various development programs implemented by government in a bid to improve life in the rural areas.
