Revisiting the Burden of Noncommunicable Disease in the Philippines

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), mostly chronic and non-transmissible diseases, have emerged as the leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally, accounting for 74% of deaths worldwide. In the Philippines, NCDs comprising 8 of the 10 leading causes of death in recent years. This study reexamines the trends, socioeconomic impact, and key risk factors of NCDs in the country. It further presents information on the effectiveness of existing policies, such as the "sin tax" on tobacco and alcohol, and public health programs aimed at reducing the NCD burden. The paper argues that despite policy advancements, significant gaps remain in addressing the problems associated with NCDs. Finally, it proffers policies that government may adopt to address the gaps in combatting NCDs, as well as proposed legislations and other strategies if the country were to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.4 of reducing premature mortality from NCDs by one-third by 2030.
