Opposing Development Perspectives in Open-Pit Mining in the Philippines

Mining industries can have destructive environmental impacts regardless of the method used. However, they also offer significant economic benefits. In particular, the impacts of surface mining methods, such as open-pit mining, on the environment and social welfare are more evident and felt by the public. This Policy Note argues that the government need not choose between economic development and environmental and social welfare. Instead, it suggests that the government can pursue the economic benefits of open-pit mining while addressing the environmental challenges that come with it. By establishing sustainability indicators, setting up monitoring and evaluation platforms, and optimizing the benefits from open-pit mines while addressing ecological integrity concerns, the country can achieve both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
