The Philippines, located within the Pacific Ring of Fire and a typhoon belt, hosts approximately 20 typhoons a year, half of which are destructive. Moreover, with twenty two active volcanoes and numerous faults and trenches, the country is also susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis. The changes in climate have also been accountable for numerous floods, landslides, torrential rains, and droughts. It is estimated that the economic loss due to these natural calamities amounts to PhP 15 Billion annually, money that could have been otherwise used for other social services.
