2022 Sipat Edukasyon Forum 3 - Developing the Multi-literacy Assessments for Filipino Children from Kindergarten to Grade 3 - Presentation

Many studies have investigated the relationships across a wide range of literacy skills and how cross-linguistic transfer of these skills occurs when learners speak more than one language. In the Philippines, where children are expected to be literate in at least two languages by the end of Grade 3 following the design of the country’s Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) Program, developing a tool to assess different literacy skills and examine these relationships is crucial.

This study describes the phases undertaken to develop a battery of literacy assessment tools for Kindergarten to Grade 3 children in Filipino and English. Phase 1 involved the development of the tools, field trial, and item analyses. Phase 2 involved further statistical analyses, with the objective of creating versions of the tools for three modes of administration.

This presentation was made during Sipat Edukasyon 2022 held on 21 November 2022. Sipat Edukasyon is the annual research dissemination forum of the Education Research Program of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS). It aims to share ERP’s research output with various stakeholders and to generate discussions to encourage future studies.
