Greening Two Countries

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Finland has extracted tar from wool or coal and used it to preserve the surfaces of ships for the then budding shipbuilding industry. Due to excessive tar production, natural forests near the shifting cultivation from the coastal areas to the inlands have worsened the state of deforested areas. Today the situation where forests are destroyed to accommodate a growing industry is a thing of the past for Finland.
