FSI CC 2018-4: Japan’s Security Policy and Relations: Clearing the “Nuclear Clouds” in the Korean Peninsula

The paper analyzes the rapid progression and paradoxes in Japan’s proactive security policy which is amplified by its vulnerability to North Korea’s nuclear provocations. As it is expected to enhance security cooperation with its allies, it has to address several challenges in rising as a prospective East Asian military power, including its heavy dependence on the US security guarantee and its society’s aversion to remilitarization.
