RP NCTS 2006-05: Analysis and Update of the Philippine Transport Energy Demand

Transportation is a major necessity in an archipelago such as the Philippines as it plays an important role in linking goods, services and people between islands. Annually, the demand for transportation increases, likewise increasing the country’s transport energy demand. Some factors contributing to this demand include the country’s economic activity, emergence of new transportation modes, population growth and the ease of traveling from one place to another due to the improvement of roads, public transport and construction of bridges. This study aims to analyze the transportation energy demand in the Philippines for a five-year period, that is, from 1997 to 2001. The process involves the analysis of the energy demand of the land, rail, air and water transport. Data were gathered from government and private institutions dealing with the transportation sector. The study intends to provide an insight of the growth in energy use and fuel efficiency in the country.
