A Survey on the Present Shiftwork Practices in the Semiconductor Industry

This study documents the present shift work practices in selected semiconductor companies in the Philippines. It aims to find out the effects of shift work on laborer’s health, family, and social life. A questionnaire was designed for data-gathering. A total of 85 respondents participated in the study. Of these respondents, 10 belong to a company that has only one shift. The response of the workers in this company was used as the basis of comparison. Since the workers are involved in the “normal” day shift, it is assumed to be ideal. There are variations in the organization of shift work schedule. Some of the surveyed companies follow three shifts of eight hours each while some companies follow a two-shift schedule of 12 hours each. The study reveals that workers who have shorter shift rotation have a higher percentage of occupational disease compared to workers with longer shift rotation. Workers in an 8-hour schedule have more time for social activities than workers in a 12-hour schedule.
