Development and Evaluation of Modules on Selected Topics in General Chemistry for Tertiary Students


The study focused on the development and evaluation of modules on selected topics in General Chemistry: Periodic Table, Periodic Trends, and Chemical Bonding. These modules were intended to be used as supplement materials in General Chemistry (Chem 100), a course offering of the Chemistry Department for Common First Year (CFY) students. It was conducted at the Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, during the first semester of SY 2001-2002. It covered the second term period of the course syllabus on Chem 100. The respondents consisted of 30 randomly selected Common First Year (CFY) students enrolled during the first semester of the school year 2001-2002. Faculty evaluators were four experts in module writing from the De La Salle University in Manila and the Central Luzon State University. Evaluation of the content characteristics included the following criteria: objectives, clarity, and relevance. The evaluation on instructional characteristics was focused on the following dimensions: design, extent of students’ interest and participation, and effectiveness. Descriptive statistical tests were used to analyze the gathered data. These statistical tools were frequency count, mean, and standard deviation. Results of the summary evaluation on the content and instructional characteristics of the modules for the student respondents obtained the weighted mean of 4.367 and 4.289 respectively, which were qualitatively described as “Excellent”. This implies that the student respondents appreciated very much the use of modules in General Chemistry. On the other hand, results of the summary evaluation of the content and instructional characteristics of the modules for faculty evaluators obtained the average weighted mean of 3.83 for both which was qualitatively described as “Very Good”. This implies that the developed modules could be appropriate materials to provide students an independent learning experiences as well as supplementary materials for the faculty members in teaching General Chemistry.
