The Study on Effective Urban Downtown Pedestrian Streets in Metro Manila

The aim of the research is to determine if pedestrian street environment influences an individual's decision to take a particular route within downtown areas. Two types of surveys were conducted, namely: street user perception survey and the route choice survey. The paper focused on three major areas: the characteristics of potential street users; perception of the street users with regards to the impact of pedestrianization; and factors that affect the route choice of individuals. The first two served as basis in determining the explanatory variables to be included in model development. The latter focused on the route choice model development using discrete choice analysis. Tha aim is to establish the relation between route choice and route characteristics. Given the characteristics of pedestrians, the alternatives and the route attributes, a model was developed that would establish the factors affecting an individual's decision to choose a particular route give two pedestrian street options within a downtown environment.
