Nonoc and Dinagat are known to be naturally rich in nickel, chromium, and iron. Biological indicators for water quality were identified from the algal species that could tolerate toxic levels of these heavy metals. Water quality of each station, characteized by its heavy metal content and physico-chemical parameters, was correlated with the corresponding phytoplankton species and abundance.
