Financial intermediation in the country still continues to fall short of expectations despite a liberalized finance environment. This paper takes off from this issue to re-assess the Philippine experience under financial liberalization with particular attention on its effects on enhancing intermediation efficiency. In this regard, the intermediation performance of formal financial institutions based on selected indicators over the 80s and 90s will serve as principal basis for the analysis. Focus is on the agriculture/rural sector.
