Identification and Evaluation of Prime Agricultural Lands for Land Use Policy Formulation: A Philippine Perspective

The paper assesses the current government policies on and practices of land and space uses, laying out the grounds for a new land use classification scheme. Major observations raised include biased policies and thrusts that are more directed towards forest conservation rather than agriculture, a fragmented and conflicting information on land resource and space uses, and a prohibitive 18-percent slope as the sole criterion for classification. The author presents a framework for a more comprehensive study of land resources as basis for a sound land use policy.
