The Poverty Explosion: Population Growth and Income Decline in Davao City, 1972

The paper is a comprehensive survey measuring social, economic and demographic characteristics of Davao City residents. The baseline study results failed to support the study’s premise that rapid upward social mobility through expanded economic opportunity will bring about immediate reductions in fertility in Davao. Although the population of Davao City was increasing at nearly twice the rate defines as explosive growth, the economic situation where 50 percent of its people were living in absolute poverty was not likely to improve as could be gleaned on prevailing trends at that time.
