PPJ Vol. III No. 2 1972-03: Manila Bay Metropolitan Region: Some Tentative Principles For Strategic Planning

The paper attempts at tentative principles for the future planning and development of the Manila Bay metropolitan region based on the author’s several years of stay in Manila as a visiting professor and project manager of the UNDP Special Fund Project at the UP Institute of Planning. With a discussion of the growth problems of Metropolitan Manila, it is shown that a requisite for harnessing the region’s potential for growth is the consideration of a greater geographical area. The discussion therefore leads on to the patterns of growth of Metro Manila, its major transport linkages as well as its urbanization pattern, the need for coordination for planning and development and therefore the strategic components of development coordination, and some tentative principles for strategic planning.
