PPJ Vol. III No. 1 1971-02: Hope or Despair: A Comparative Study of Slum and Squatter Communities in Five Different Cities

The paper clarifies issues and problems as well as describes the nature of life in slum and squatter communities. Specifically, it attempts to determine the reasons behind the migration of squatters and slum dwellers to urban areas and describe the nature and characteristics of the slum or squatter community, ascertain the social, political and economic functions performed by them, and analyze the problems associated with squatting and slum dwelling. Lastly, the paper is an examination of the governmental and non-governmental measures that have been used in dealing with such problems.
