PN 2000-19: From APEC Formation to Consolidation: Policy Suggestions for ASEAN

In the midst of numerous intraregional, interregional and global economic regimes which are aimed at facilitating trading relations among economies, what is the role of the APEC? What is its "value-added" to the Asia-Pacific region and to its member-states, in particular, its ASEAN members? On the other hand, what courses of action should the ASEAN members of the APEC combined take to help strengthen APEC's consolidation path and clearly define its role, and to ensure a greater and more united ASEAN front/voice in negotiations/discussions within and beyond APEC? This Policy Notes presents three general policy prescriptions that may help in achieving these goals.
