Improving Quality of Health Care Services in the Primary Health Care Setting

This research project intended to draw out lessons about quality health care service from research and documentation of the local experiences of public and private health service agencies. The lessons would serve as inputs to a realistic, wider, and continuous implementation of quality health care service in the country. In documenting concrete experiences in and examples of quality improvement strategies and initiatives related to primary health care provision, the researchers were able to identify both institutional and resource requirements for institutionalizing quality improvement programs in the local health facilities. Recommendations based on the project’s results were made which are of relevance to both policy-makers and primary health service providers. These recommendations focused on ensuring an effective and sustained implementation of quality improvement initiatives and on enhancing the agencies’ ability to monitor and to evaluate service quality.
