Women in Power and Decision-Making

The Philippines has been gaining momentum over the last 25 years of its commitment to the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). For the previous years, the country upheld its commitment as portrayed in the gender empowerment measures of international organizations. Since 2006, the Philippines has always been in the top 10 most gender-equal countries worldwide based on the Global Gender Gap Index of the World Economic Forum (2018). However, the country dropped to No. 16 from No. 8 in the 2020 Global Gender Gap Report. The report looks into four dimensions: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. It is the latter dimension that pulled down the rank of the country as women’s representation in the Duterte cabinet has significantly dropped.
