This study analyzes the Zamboanga Peninsula's (Region IX) industrial performance from 2018 to 2022 to inform poverty reduction strategies. Using Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) employment data and Location Quotient (LQ) and Dynamic Location Quotient (DLQ) analysis, it identifies the region’s Competitive, Emerging, At-Risk and Declining industries.
The results suggest to leverage the region's strength in the competitive industries by providing direct and indirect support programs on value-adding activities. It should also promote the growth of its emerging industries by streamlining the licensing and permitting processes at both regional and local offices to foster a conducive business environment that would encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.
Furthermore, the revitalization of declining industries is needed to boost competitiveness through improve transport and connectivity infrastructure. Integral to this strategy is capacity development that offer skills training in the field of vehicle repair and maintenance, tour guiding, hotel and restaurant services, including marketing and promotions. This initiatives aim to address skills gap, expand market access and enhance overall competitiveness.
These identified subsectoral industries are projected to stimulate economic growth, generate jobs, and diversify the regional economy, thereby contributing to poverty reduction.
