Davao City, the premier city of Davao Region, has become a highly urbanized city because of its strategic location and its development as a regional trade center. However, like other highly urbanized cities, it is experiencing problems specifically traffic congestion aside from other development issues and challenges such as environmental degradation and a waning quality of life. The introduction of walkable areas is seen as one design approach to reverse the deteriorating urban space of the city. This Project aimed to contribute to the enhancement of urban spaces through a walkability model and processes that can be replicated in different areas in Davao region. With the role of NEDA XI and City Government of Davao as key agents of promoting walkability and walkable urban spaces in mind, objectives of this Project are as follows: • Develop a Walkability Model for Davao City that is adaptable to other cities in the Davao Region; • Identify at least three (3) potential areas (network of streets) in Davao City where the Walkability Model can be applied to enhance the quality of its spaces; and • Enhance the capacities of NEDA XI Technical Staff on the use of the Walkability Model for Davao City to build capacity to assess future project proposals related to non-motorized transport. To achieve these objectives, the Project has the following components: • An evaluation of the value of walking as an activity among residents of Davao City; • The identification of factors that influence the degree of walkability of identified spaces in Davao; • Use the formulated Walkability Model formulated, and computation of Walkability Indices to describe the degree of walkability of pilot areas in Davao; and • The application of the findings to improve walkability and the value of urban spaces in Davao City. Three (3) areas in Davao City were identified as the focus of the study. These areas were determined based on the predominant land use mix, which has guided several walkability studies. The areas are: 1. Ecoland/Matina Area, which is a predominantly residential area; 2. Poblacion Area, which serves as the predominantly commercial area; and 3. Lanang Area, considered also as predominantly commercial area of Davao City.
